Cookie Policy
Last updated: June 1, 2026
This page explains exactly which cookies and similar technologies TapSounds uses, what each one does, and how you can control them. We've tried to be specific rather than vague — you deserve to know what's actually being set in your browser.
What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores in your browser when you visit. The next time you visit, the browser sends that file back to the server, which is how sites remember who you are, what language you chose, or that you're logged in. Some cookies are set by the site you're visiting directly ("first-party cookies"); others are set by third-party services the site uses.
Strictly necessary cookies
These cookies are essential for the platform to function. Without them, things like logging in and staying logged in simply don't work. You cannot opt out of these.
- Session cookie: Set when you log in. Keeps you authenticated as you move between pages. Expires when you close your browser or explicitly log out. Without this, you'd be logged out on every page load.
- CSRF token: A security token that protects your account from cross-site request forgery attacks — a type of attack where a malicious site tricks your browser into taking actions on TapSounds on your behalf. Refreshed on each session.
Preference cookies
These cookies remember choices you've made so you don't have to repeat them every visit. They don't track your behaviour — they just store your settings.
- Language preference: Stores whether you prefer English, French, or Spanish. Set when you switch language using the language selector. Expires after 1 year.
- Theme preference: Stores whether you're using light or dark mode. Expires after 1 year.
- Volume level: Remembers the volume you last set on the player. This one is stored in browser local storage, not as a cookie — it stays on your device and is never sent to our servers.
Analytics
We use a minimal analytics setup to understand how TapSounds is being used — which sounds are trending, where traffic is coming from, which features are getting used, and where people drop off. This helps us make the platform better.
Our analytics are configured to anonymise IP addresses, not to build individual user profiles, and not to share data with advertising networks. The data we collect through analytics is aggregated — we see "1000 people played sounds in the Memes category today", not "this specific user played these specific sounds".
If you'd rather not be included in analytics at all, you can block our analytics script using a browser extension like uBlock Origin or Privacy Badger, or by disabling third-party cookies in your browser settings. The platform will work fine without it.
What we do not use cookies for
TapSounds does not run advertising. We do not set advertising cookies, use retargeting pixels, or work with advertising networks. We do not sell cookie data or share it with data brokers. The cookies we set exist only to make the platform work and to help us understand how it's being used in aggregate.
How to manage or delete cookies
All major browsers let you view, manage, and delete cookies. Here's where to find the settings in the most popular ones:
- Chrome: Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data
- Firefox: Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data > Manage Data
- Safari: Preferences > Privacy > Manage Website Data
- Edge: Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Cookies and site data
- Brave: Settings > Privacy and security > Cookies and other site data
You can also clear all cookies for TapSounds specifically without affecting cookies from other sites. Deleting the session cookie will log you out. Deleting preference cookies means the platform will forget your language and theme choices until you set them again.
Changes to this policy
If we add new cookies or make material changes to how we use existing ones, we'll update this page and change the date at the top. If the change affects strictly necessary cookies, we'll notify registered users by email.
